Magazine Art

Magazine Art

This week our assignment was to make a sculpture out of a section of a Waitrose food magazine. I folded over the pages off the magazine into swirly shapes. I then paper clipped the pages so that they would hold there shape. When I had finished paper clipping all the pages, I took out the paper clips and stuck the edges of the paper to other swirly shapes.

I was very happy with the outcome off my artwork, it was a nice simple activity and I enjoyed it but if there was one thing i could change about my work it would be adapting the shapes more so that there is a bigger verity of shapes and sizes.

Bottle slumping clay mould

To make an successful slumped bottle, you have to make a mould to hold the bottle so it will keep its shape.

Equipment:

  • Rolling pin
  • Water pot
  • Mat
  • Knife and Fork
  • Clay that is a plastic consistency

1. Cover the glass bottle in paper towels and use masking tape to keep them stuck to the bottle, this means that the glass bottle wont stick to the clay.
2. Take the clay slab, and flatten it out. Keep turning the slab over as you flatten it out roll it out till it is about 1cm thick.
3. Trim the edges with the knife so you have a long flat oval shape. With the scraps of clay roll 2 fat sausage shapes, stick them to the bottle so it doesn't roll.
4. Drape the clay slab over the bottle and shape around it.
5. Make 4 cross hatching marks on the slab, roll up 4 more balls from the scrap clay and cross hatch them. Add the slip (water) and stick them onto mould.
6. Leave the mould for a couple off days to go bone dry.
7. Put the bottle and the mould into the kiln at 1100 degrees.

3D book art

3D Book art

Our assignment was to create a 3D art sculpture from a book that we were given randomly, my book was about medicine and a women who wanted to make medicine but she lived in a time where women were not aloud to work, so she decided to make thing happen for herself and she created a life saving drug that prevented horrible diseases. So I used the medicine idea and thought off the idea of a bottle of pills that had been knocked over. I then developed this idea and rolled up newspaper into a tube and then stuffed it to make it stronger this formed the start off the bottle of pills. I then piled up circles of newspaper and used then to make the base of the lid, next I rolled up little oval shaped balls as the pills then for the pill I wrapped two different kinds of paper to cover them. I used the edge off the paper which had no writing on and I wrapped it  around half of the pill then I used the text covered paper to cover the rest of the pill. I then covered the rest of the sculpture in the pages off the book.

I felt that my 3D art work went very well, i worked hard on my sculpture and I liked the idea of wrapping 2 different kinds of paper around the tablets. I thought that making the sculpture would be very challenging , but it wasn't as hard as I thought it would be. If  I could change one thing about it I would like to make the edges smoother so they aren't so rough.

2D book art

I created a 2D art sculpture out of my book using a simple cutting method. I used a small sculpture knife to cut through the pages of the book, this was especially difficult because I had stuck 4 of the pages together on both sides of the book to give the impending form more strength. My book was called Crop Nutrition And Fertilisation, so I took the idea of using the image of a watering can. I chose this particular image because a Watering Can is used to water plants in gardens so it is a form of fertilisation. I didn't want to chose a image like a tractor or a bunch off plants because this would be to obvious idea.

I was very happy with my result, I like the watering can idea, it was very simple but effective. if I could change this piece. I would make the edges off the watering can smooth. the edges off the sculpture are rough because I used the wrong end of the scoring knife to cut out the shape.
